Biography
Danakil’s films leave people changed. Danakil developed his innovative style while traveling, often to some of the most isolated places. The contemporary art world quickly took notice of the images he photographed while globe-trotting.
His first show, “The Desperation of Those Who Have Everything”, at the Palais de Tokyo in 2004, was selected by French Art Is Not Dead, alongside seven other artists, to represent the French Avant Garde in Europe. This series marked the beginning of his career as a photographer and videographer. From there, his work was exhibited at MoCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Shanghai and Melbourne. Danakil is often invited to biennials and various exhibitions to showcase his constantly evolving artistic exploration.
Nappy, a film about the “the golden youth” and the despair of those who have everything, launched Danakil into cinematographic art. His aesthetic and sensibility garnered attraction from the music world, and he began directing music videos, including Antibodies for Poni Hoax, which created a scandal at the British Film Institute in London and won numerous awards, including the Saatchi & Saatchi Showcase. At the Antville Awards, he won the “Best New Director Award” in 2010 and the “Best Narrative Video of the Year” for Milk Teeth by Mohini Geisweiller in 2011.
Danakil’s advertising career took off when Converse US selected him to direct a strange and captivating film about a teenager looking for the soul of his childhood robot.
Danakil is a master at creating abnormal and exotic experiences. His work often embodies sensuality, fragility, and a deep connection with natural elements.
