Biography

Olivier Babinet burst onto the scene in 1999 with the debut of his series “Le Bidule” on the French channel, Canal +.  As seen through his clips, commercials, and playful short films, he introduces us to a world of hallucinations and false naiveté, filled with colorful child-like images that also hint upon themes more dark and sinister.

Influenced by alternative rock, fantasy literature, independent American films, and French New Wave cinema, he derides the bleakness of our current world under the guise of light-hearted and quasi-naïve sequences. By diving deep into the heart of our celebrity and consumer-based society, Olivier Babinet infiltrates our day-to-day life and dreams by altering our reality and creating surrealistic and “melancomic” adventures.

In 2009 his short film C’est plûtot genre Johnny Walker won the Special Jury Award at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. His first feature film, the road-movie, Robert Mitchum is Dead premiered at the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival. The film took home the Best New French Feature Film prize at the Festival Premier Plans in Angers. The movie is also nominated as Best First Film at the Raindance London Festival.
